• All students in 7th grade at Tucker Creek Middle School will participate in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math classes.  Below is information on each class and links to the Parent Guides to the NC State standards that guide our instruction.

     

    Language Arts

    The Common Core State Standards are evidence-based; consequently, students learn to value evidence to accomplish educational goals. In the sixth grade, students demonstrate mastery of skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and language throughout the year. Students become sophisticated readers and engage with a variety of text types, including literacy and informational texts. They focus on reading comprehension and experience increased opportunities for collaborative learning. Students write for a variety of audiences and purposes and use informational resources and technology to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills. Students apply conventions of Standard English in a variety of formats, develop academic language to effectively present information, and demonstrate understanding of relationships among words, in a variety of situations.  Students must take the End-of-Grade test.

    Math

    Instruction and learning in Math 7 focuses on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions, linear equations, and inequalities; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.  Students must take the Grade 7 End-of-Grade test.

    Science

    The 7th grade science curriculum targets these concepts for in-depth study: forces and motion; forms of energy, energy transfer and transformation and conservation in mechanical systems; cycling of water and gases in the atmosphere and the impact on weather and climate; comparison of structures and functions in single-cellular and multi-cellular organisms including the systems of humans; and genetics and patterns of inheritance.  Students must take the NC Final Exam.

    Social Studies

    Students in seventh grade continue to expand upon the knowledge, skills and understanding acquired in the sixth grade examination of early civilizations. Seventh graders study the world from the Age of Exploration to contemporary times in order to understand the implications of increased global interactions. The focus remains on the discipline of geography by using the themes of location, place, movement, human-environmental interaction and region to understand modern societies and regions. This course guides students through patterns of change and continuity with a focus on conflict and cooperation, economic development, population shifts, political thought and organization, cultural values and beliefs and the impact of environment over time. Through an investigation of the various factors that shaped the development of societies and regions in the modern world and global interactions, students examine both similarities and differences. A conscious effort should be made to include an integrated study of various societies and regions from every continent (Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia).  Students must take the NC Final Exam.
