• Mrs. Sherri Thomas, Principal

Hello! My name is Sherri Thomas. I am excited to be joining the James W. Smith Elementary School family & community as their new principal!

The past six years, I have been the assistant principal at Trent Park Elementary. Before serving as an assistant principal, I taught kindergarten for twelve years at Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary. I earned my undergraduate and masters degrees from East Carolina University. I serve as a board member of Craven County Schools Partners In Education (PIE).

I am the proud mother of three girls. Sarah, a sophomore at ECU, Shelby, a senior at WCHS and Saylor, a 7th grader at WCMS. My husband and I have been married for twenty-one years. We live in Vanceboro. I love spending time with my family and reading a good book at the beach.

My goal is to continue growing greatness at JWS with the support of the students, staff, families, and community.

  • Mrs. Michelle Wall, Assistant Principal

I am currently starting my sixth year as Assistant Principal at James W. Smith Elementary, and I have sincerely enjoyed watching each student grow over the years I've been here!  I believe every student has the ability to soar, and at our school we work to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of every student.

I have 24 years of experience in education.  I was a classroom teacher for 19 years, teaching Title I with grades K-3, then I taught first grade and second grade.  I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University, with a concentration in music.  I went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Western Carolina University, then achieved an add-on certification in School Leadership from Appalachian State University.

My husband and I have lived in New Bern for 18 years.  I love to read, knit, work in the garden, play the piano, and relax with my family and friends when time permits.

I look forward to getting to know your child even more this year, and working with you to help your student be successful.
