Mrs. Misty Guthrie

Hi and welcome to my page! My name is Mrs. Misty Guthrie, and I am excited to be returning to the STEM Lab at Tucker Creek Middle School this year! I grew up in Milton, FL, but I have lived in Havelock for over 25 years.

I attended and graduated from East Carolina University with my teaching degree in 2007. Before I became a teacher, I obtained my degree in Business Administration from Craven Community College and worked as an office administrator and co-owned a local trade business which is still in operation today.

I am the mother of 4 boys all of whom are in high school and/or college. Each one of my children is unique in their interests, talents, and learning styles. Because of my own life experiences, and watching my children navigate high school and beyond, I have become a huge proponent of CTE (Career and Technical Education). Today's high school students can obtain many different industry-recognized certifications and develop skills for well-paying careers in a variety of respectable trades. I consider part of my job to be preparing the way for students to discover their interests and learn about the opportunities that exist for them in high school and in our community upon graduation. I believe that a study of STEM and problem-based learning can help any student, no matter their future pathway.

I decided to become a teacher because I love school and love learning. I especially have a passion for problem-based learning. In addition, I enjoy music, math, science, technology and learning things that push me out of my comfort zone. This is my 16th year of teaching, all of which have been in Craven County Schools. I have previously taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades, as well as 7th grade Math prior to teaching in the STEM exploratory classroom.

I encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and ask questions when they are confused about something we are learning. I also encourage them to take risks and embrace mistakes as an important and normal part of learning.  My hope is that through my class, your child becomes a better communicator, critical thinker, collaborator, and creative problem-solver. In all careers and roles in life, these skills are vital for success.

Parents may contact me at any time through the Remind app or email with any questions or concerns. I will respond as soon as possible.
