Bridging the Access and Homework Gaps
Craven ConnectED is our initiative to bridge the access and homework gaps. Our first task is to ensure our students have equal access to a robust device to enhance instruction. With that, we have expanded our iPad initiative to include 3rd through 12th Grades. Providing these devices increases opportunities for our students to extend their learning and gain access to a variety of educational apps, resources, and information.
In the Fall of 2019 Craven County Schools began the process of bridging the homework gap by partnering with the Kajeet and the 1MillionProject. High school students that do not have reliable wi-fi at home may qualify for our 1Million Project Internet Scholarship. If selected, these students will receive a personal 4G mi-fi (hotspot) from Sprint which can be used throughout their high school career. In addition, we have now mobile hotspots for students from Kajeet. We hope to acquire and provide more devices for students in need very soon!
Our mobile classrooms will be on the roads in no time. We are excited to offer free wi-fi on some of our schools' activity buses. During long trips to and from extra-curriculuar activities students can now get a jump on studying, finishing up homework, or collaborating with peers while on the bus.
Craven County Schools will be expanding our community partnerships by joining with local businesses that offer free wi-fi. Making sure all of our students have access to free wi-fi will certainly take a community effort. This is our way of starting that challenge.
We are very excited to offer these programs to our students. They deserve the best access to tools and connectiviy that we can provide.
