Ms. Shy

My name is Shamella Shy and I am a native and resident of Eastern North Carolina. I am the mother of 3 wonderful daughters and a very handsome boy-dog.

In 2003, I graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill with a BA in Sociology and Women’s Studies. Immediately following graduation, I moved back home to Eastern North Carolina and began working. I worked in the human services field as a mental health caseworker for 7 years and later found interest in teaching. I began as a Teacher Assistant and Bus Driver with Craven County Schools which I continued for 4 years. I am currently a 2nd grade teacher at Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School going into my fourth year of teaching.

It is my belief that every student is an expert and that it is my job to tap into his/her expertise. I am also a believer that every student deserves a high quality education. My future goals entail supporting children who fall into the "at-risk" category by initiating college and career readiness programs that begin in the early years of elementary school.  Though I'll miss seeing students face to face this year, I am positive about what we will gain from the challenge of a new type of learning.
