Board of Education Vacancy Process and Timeline

The Craven County Board of Education process to select a replacement for a seated vacancy is as follows:
- Board Member announces and tenders resignation
- Board of Education announces vacancy and advertises position in all available media
- Applications posted on website and provided to interested candidates
- Board of Education receives applications by published deadline
- Board of Education conducts interviews for qualified applicants:
- Board of Education Vacancy Qualifications:
- Must live in vacated District
- Will be able complete the remaining years of a four-year term
- Is a registered voter
- Can only be on one elected and one appointed county/state board
- Must be able to participate in new board member training (TBD) and in Raleigh
- Must meet continual training requirements according the guidelines of the North Carolina School Boards Association
- Must be available for monthly board and committee meetings and occasional called meetings.
- Board of Education Vacancy Qualifications:
- Board of Education selects and announces applicant who will serve
- Board of Education conducts swearing-in of new candidate
For the vacancy created by the resignation of Mrs. Beatrice Smith in District 4, the following timeline has been established:
- Applications Available: January 4, 2021
- Press Release: Sunday, January 10, 2021
- Applications due to Craven County Schools Board of Education (care of Myra Flowers): Monday, February 1, 2021 (5:00 p.m.)
- Applications reviewed for the purpose of evaluating whether they meet the requirements (see above) by Chairman and Vice-Chairman.
- Application copies distributed to Board of Education members by noon on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 (digitally or available for hard-copy pick-up).
- Interviews: Tuesday, February 16, 2020 at the conclusion of the Board of Education work session
- Selection Voted on and Announced: Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the regular Board of Education meeting
- Swearing-In: TBD if not at February 18, 2021 Board of Education meeting
