Degrees and Certifications:
My name is Rachel DeBerry. I am from Roanoke Rapids, NC and attended college at North Carolina State University, majoring in Middle Grades Science Education. I lived in Raleigh for four years before moving to New Bern. My husband also graduated from NC State (GO PACK!) and works at the Paper Mill here in New Bern.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time outside with my family and friends. I am the oldest of three siblings and I have a sister and brother in college. We all three have played sports all of our lives. I am an avid swimmer. I also really love soccer and distant running.
I chose to teach science because...
I never saw science as being easy. However, I did have a lot of great science teachers that made learning science fun. When I try to explain why science is so important, I always point to science process skills. I believe that science process skills are life skills, especially in today's world. I want to teach my students to think critically and apply what they know in order to solve problems. I want to empower my students while they learn science content because these skills are critical for their future. Every child can be successful when they apply themselves. Science is all around us so there's always something you can find to help a child fall in love with learning.
