Mrs. Megan Ireland
I am so excited to be your 5th-grade reading teacher this year! This will be my 18th year teaching and my first year teaching 5th grade. I began my career by teaching 3rd grade for three years and then transitioned to 4th grade, where I have spent the last 14 years. I graduated from East Carolina University with my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Child Studies. I hold a Master's Degree in Instructional Technology Education, also from ECU. I received my National Boards in the area of Middle Childhood Education in 2010. I currently live in New Bern with my husband, Evan, and two children, Anna & Colin.
In order to keep you well informed, I will be using Class DoJo. Please know that the points on Class DoJo accumulate and do not reset each day. So, if your child has +6 points and -1 point on Monday and then +10 points and -1 point on Tuesday, that means that your child did not lose any points on Tuesday (the -1 is the cumulative total lost until the points are reset), but that they gained 4 points on Tuesday. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! Class Dojo has a messaging feature that allows me to quickly respond to messages and also allows me to send out class announcements and reminders. It also sends you an alert each time your child loses or gains points.
I will also send home a red folder every Tuesday with your child's graded papers from the week and any other important papers. Please review the papers and return the folder and any necessary papers on Wednesday.
I will keep you posted on important dates, such as testing. In 5th grade, as you know, we have the EOGs at the end of the year and quite a bit of testing throughout the year. Please make sure that before each testing day, your child gets plenty of sleep and eats a good breakfast.

This is a great visual showing why it is so important for your child to read 20 minutes each day at home! Why your child should read 20 mins
